For a long time now, these restrictions and exclusions have been seen as a tool to uphold and protect the American culture and ensure security to the American citizens (Johnson, 1998). However, these legislations have many racial and discrimination effects to the citizens of some countries like the African and Asian countries. Model minority free essay sample

The â€Å"model minority,† as defined in Racial and Ethnic Relations, is the stereotypical view that certain Asian American, and occasionally other, groups are seen to be exemplary in socioeconomic and moral characteristics. This stereotype is most typically applied to Japanese Americans, Chinese Americans, and other Asian American groups. These groups are often compared to other immigrants of color, and are increasingly deemed more socially acceptable than African Americans. Actually, the term â€Å"model minority† was created during the race riots and demonstrations of the 1960s in the United States when African Americans were protesting for their freedoms. White scholars and media analysts intentionally created the idea of a â€Å"model minority† to suggest that African Americans were perfectly capable of achieving their American dream by working harder rather than protesting against discrimination. What was initially started by white scholars as a means to discredit the need for social uproar by African Americans has turned into an umbrella stereotype of Asian Americans; one that is increasingly difficult for Asian Americans to distance themselves from. We will write a custom essay sample on Model minority or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page One obvious stereotype associated with the â€Å"model minority† is that Asian Americans are typically viewed as being extremely high-achieving in their education. According the C. N. Le, a Ph. D.  candidate at the University of Albany, over 42% of all Asian American adults have at least a college degree. Le also states that Asian American students typically have the highest test scores and GPAs compared to any other high school or college schoolmates. While hard work and dedication may run in the veins of most Asian Americans, what is lost on most people is that not all Asians are created equal. The â€Å"model minority† stereotype has many negative attachments. The pressure put on Asian Americans to be extremely intelligent and excel in school can be overwhelming to those who are just unable to. There are high and low achievers in every race or ethnic group, so it is unfair to place this type of pressure on Asian Americans, even if a great majority of Asian Americans are high-achieving. Le points out that over half of Asian Americans are recent immigrants and a large proportion of them are not fluent in English. While inherit values such as hard work and patience are part of the cultural upbringing of most Asian American families, not every Asian a person meets is going to be a math genius or a doctor. Another negative side effect of being labeled as a â€Å"model minority† is the general assumption that because a particular race or ethnic group is typically seen to be exemplary in terms of education and finance, that those belonging to this ethnic group are not in need of government assistance. The 2006 Census estimates that Asian Americans as a whole typically earn a greater household income than Whites, African Americans, and Latinos (Kasinitz). What is not taken into account is the fact that most Asian households typically have larger families with more adults who are employed as compared to other race or ethnic groups (Kasinitz). While Japanese and Chinese Americans are usually found in the upper crust of education attainment and income, many other Asian groups, such as Cambodian, are found very close to the bottom. The â€Å"model minority† stereotype has forced many people to focus only on those Asian American groups who are excelling, while those who are suffering and in need of assistance are cast aside. The â€Å"model minority† stereotype has many negative influences on Asian Americans. There are increasingly high expectations to younger generations to succeed in school and career choices. In the cases where members of the emerging generation fail to succeed, they are not only ridiculed by their high-expecting families, but also by a society which has come expect only great things from them. Another pitfall coming from the â€Å"model minority† stereotype is the incorrect assumption that because Asian Americans are held to this high standard that there is no long any prejudice or discrimination against their ethnic group. In reality, discrimination against Asian Americans is still prevalent today. The â€Å"model minority† stereotype was created with the intent to make an example out of what society saw as an exemplary minority group; unfortunately, being placed on this pedestal has created even more obstacles for Asian Americans.

United Way Company

Motivation is the impetus of the efforts by the employees of any firm who desires to achieve their goals and objectives. A motivated workforce is what keeps an organization going even in hard economic times. On the other hand, a workforce that is not motivated will succumb to extraneous factors such as a severe economic recession.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on United Way Company specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It is the responsibility of the management in any organization to keep its employees motivated in a bid to evade the unpleasant consequences that come with a demotivated staff. Several theories have been suggested to explain the concept of motivation. This essay will discuss the motivational theory that best describes United Way’s use of training. A keen observation would reveal that United Way Company uses Clayton Alderfer’s ERG theory in its use of training. This theory posits that m otivation solely relies on three main aspects. These aspects are Existence, Relatedness and Growth. The theory is an improvement of Abraham Maslow’s Need Hierarchy theory. In this theory, Alderfer tries to find an explanation for the different levels of human needs. The three elements of the ERG theory each have a role to play in the satisfaction of an individual’s needs. One notable thing in this theory is that the satisfaction or dissatisfaction of one element directly affects the other. According to Alderfer, growth is the internal desire that an employee develops for personal development. United Way capitalizes on this factor of the ERG theory in order to motivate its employees. This comes from the company’s realization that each single employee has an intrinsic desire for personal and professional growth. The most effective way of attaining this goal is to formulate a special training program that builds on the employees’ knowledge and skills hence b oosting the company’s performance. The United Way’s extraordinary training strategy is effectively structured to meet the employees’ motivational needs. For instance, by providing the employees with a chance to suggest on the training sections that are most effective and those that are not, they get a feeling of importance and are hence motivated. The volunteers in the organization also get the same feeling and devote more dedication to their service in the company. The end result will be a motivated work force that has realized the need for personal development as well as the development of the United Way Company.Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? They are motivated because they get a chance to interact with them and lea rn the skills that will take them to such levels. This is especially important for those workers who have just begun their career and have big professional goals to achieve. It is also important for the general company which will stand to benefit from the motivated efforts of the workers. In addition, the need for personal development and growth works in favor of the United Way Company. This is because while in pursuit of this growth, employees are unlikely o heed to the extrinsic factors which may be a source of distraction. Such factors may include low income levels and uncomfortable working conditions. This motivation that is derived from the organization’s training will go a long way in improving its operation. In conclusion, it is evident from the above explanation that Alderfer’s ERG theory best describes United Way’s use of training as a tool to motivate its workers. The training program offered by the company contributes to the personal and professional growth of the workers leading to their increased efficiency. Devlin, Dworkin and Mill essays

Devlin, Dworkin and Mill essays In this essay, I will discuss the beliefs of J.S. Mill, Patrick Devlin and Ronald Dworkin. These three men hold different, yet similar positions on freedom of speech, privacy and society. First, I will illustrate how Dworkins idea of a free society includes more details than Devlins. Also, how Dworkins moral reasoning is an important aspect of freedom. Next, I will explain Mills harm principle in relation to Devlin and Dworkin. I will also illustrate that Mills principles relate to censorship and drug laws. Finally, I will relate Mills principle to Devlins and present my rationale for Mill believing in principles that would prove to be sufficient for Devlins free society. Ronald Dworkin explains how Devlins criterion for a free society is lacking rational standards for restrictions on freedom. These are the ground rules of moral reasoning in Dworkins opinion and are imperative to a free society. For example, on page 35, regarding homosexuality Devlin states, We should ask ourselves in the first instance whether, looking at it calmly and dispassionately, we regard it as a vice so abominable that its mere presence is an offense. If that is the genuine feeling of the society in which we live, I do not see how society can be denied the right to eradicate it. Dworkin believes that if a large portion of society deems something wrong, then this action does not represent society and should be banned. Dworkin does not concern himself with the location of the occurrence of the homosexual acts. In his opinion, if society agrees, all homosexual acts should be prohibited. Devlin, on the other side of the spectrum, feels that homosexual acts practiced in the privacy of the home should not be illegal. Devlins position illustrates the need for public morality. However, public morality cannot in...
